OUR INITIATIVES
EVERY BITE COUNTS
Goodbye Malaria & NOVA Chocolate launched 4 flavours to raise funds for the fight against malaria…
BACKGROUND
In 2019, South Africa Brands, Goodbye Malaria & NOVA Chocolate teamed up to launch a range of sugar-free, fat-free, taste-good, does-good, artisanal dark chocolate that uses ethically sourced ingredients called “Every Bite Counts”.
The initial two existing dark chocolate flavours have helped raise much-needed funds for priority malaria elimination programmes’s in Southern Africa, as well as, created increased advocacy through the sales of the chocolate bars. The Dark chocolate range has been a “vegan” and “slimmer’s” favourite treat.
NOVA went on to launch an additional two milk variants to the Goodbye Malaria range, namely “Salted Caramel & Chilli Flavour” & “Coconut Flavour”, which have also managed to assist in our funding and awareness raising initiatives.
WHY CHOCOLATE?
Goodbye Malaria is committed to finding innovative solutions to eliminate malaria from Southern Africa. Core to the organisation are the values of care, true grit & integrity (doing the right thing – even when nobody is watching). These values have been purposefully incorporated into the artowork of this specific chocolate box ranges, especially commisioned for the initiative.
Women pplay a significant role in the fight against Malaria. FOr this reason the beautiful packaging of the Goodbye malaria rnages depict young, modern African women to represent all those who are fighting malaria on the frontlilne, as well as, those who are impacted by the disease.
WOMEN’S ROLE IN THE FIGHT AGAINST MALARIA
- Women make up 70% of the community health workers who have helped significantly drive down malaria cases and deaths-a major contribution to the 7.6 million lives saved and 1.5 billion of malaria cases prevented since 2000.
- An increase in women’s household bargaining power decreases the likelihood that a family member contracts malaria by 40%.
- Women and girls experience unique adverse ripple effects of malaria resulting in significant and long term health and economic costs. Disruptions in prevention and control efforts due to COVID-19 could result in a surge of malaria cases and deaths.
- In 2018, 1 in 3 pregnant women in Sub-Saharan Africa were infected with malaria and 900,000 children were born with a low birth rate.
- Health systems are increasingly engaging women from the same community as community healthcare workers. This facilitates uptake of services by women and empowers women by raising their social status and benefiting broader community awareness on issues such as malaria.
